Elon Musk voiced his support for a so-called “freedom convoy” of Canadian truckers and other activists on their way to Ottawa to protest the country’s vaccine mandates and other COVID-19 control measures.
“Canadian truckers rule,” tweeted Musk, who in September 2020 said he would not get vaccinated for COVID-19 on the grounds he and his family were not at risk.
But he also said to the news outlet that he was against mandates, saying, “We’ve got to watch out for the erosion of freedom in America.”
Earlier this month, Canada said it would permit unvaccinated Canadian truck drivers to enter from the U.S., a reversal from a previous mandate for all truckers. Under that policy, American truck drivers were still required to be vaccinated.
The protesters are unhappy that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party government has imposed a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for cross-border truck drivers.
