World Manila, last June nito 'ring taon?

O di ba me "issue"?

Teka? "Kabit" ba o "Kabet". Ano ba tama?

DOCUMENTARIES

MY REVOLUTIONARY MOTHER
by Jethro Patalinghug
30:30mins/2013

Even at the age of 36, filmmaker JethroPatalinghug had never quite gotten over the gaping hole in his childhood: the perpetual absence of his mother as he grew up in The Philippines.

Virginia was an activist in the People’s Power Revolution of the 80s, and constantly away from home. Fearing for her life, she eventually had little choice but to leave her family behind and flee to the United States.Twenty years after their separation, Jethro confronts Virginia about his sense of abandonment. It’s not a perfect reconciliation, but it’s an honest conversation between a mother and son that helps them move on. /Print source: Jethro Patalinghug (jethrocuenca@googlemail.com)

SOUTHEAST ASIAN CINEMA
WHEN THE ROOSTER CROWS
by Leonardo Lombrosio
88mins/2014

At one level, there are four subjects in this documentary: Brillante Mendoza– ultra neo-realist and pioneer in the regionalisation of Philippine Cinema; Pen-Ek Ratanaruang–American-educated “isolated man” and improvisational Thai New Wave auteur; Eric Khoo– an icon of Singaporean filmmaking and a food-loving, heat-hating lover of country and cinema; and Garin Nugroho–multicultural political filmmaker and magical realist extraordinaire.

At another level, there are four other subjects – the lives of ordinary people in provisional Philippines, an increasingly divided Thailand, censorship in Singapore, and an Indonesia finding its way through messy democracy.Altogether, this is a wonderful celebration of the diversity and richness of Southeast Asian Cinema.

AN KUBO SA KAWAYANAN
(The House in the Bamboo Grove)
by Alvin Yapan
83mins/2015

Michelle lives in her own special world. Everyone is trying to convince her to abandon the house by the bamboo grove: her boyfriend trying to look for work in the city or abroad, a nosy neighbor trying to make ends meet by working as a teacher, and even a filmmaker trying to do a documentary on Michelle’s skill as a calado embroiderer, which she clings onto as strongly as she stays in the house. The film tells the intimate story of how Michelle’s house, along with the things around her: a river stone, a June beetle, and a can of sardines, would help her preserve the ecology of joy and peace she nurtures by the bamboo grove. In Michelle’s world everything is interconnected, and even the smallest of things has a story to tell.  Michelle’s story is an unconventional love story with her house by the bamboo grove. The film is a meditation on the virtue of staying at a time of migration, of permanence in a land of cultural erosion.
